High above the Colorado River, perched 7,100 feet above sea level, sits something you’d never expect to find on a mountain: a theme park. Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park, in the heart of Glenwood Springs, is America’s only mountaintop amusement park — part adrenaline playground, part geologic wonder, and all unforgettable.
The Gondola Ride: A Stunning Start
The journey to the top starts with a gondola ride that sweeps guests from the valley floor to Iron Mountain’s crest. As you rise above the trees, the view widens — the Roaring Fork Valley stretching below, the Colorado River curling like a silver ribbon, and peaks of the Rockies in every direction. It’s a hint of the grandeur to come, both above and below ground.
From Dream to Reality: The Beckleys’ Vision

The park owes its existence to a pair of college sweethearts with a passion for adventure: Steve and Jeanne Beckley. Back in the 1980s, Steve became fascinated by the privately owned Fairy Caves, a spectacular system closed to the public and fiercely protected by owner Pete Prebble. For years, Steve’s letters requesting access were returned unopened. Finally, after a decade of persistence, Prebble relented.
In 1992, Steve and Jeanne crawled through a nine-inch crack known as “Jam Crack” and emerged into The Barn, a massive chamber with fiery red walls. The experience sealed their dream: these wonders had to be shared. By 1999, they had acquired the property, opened it to visitors, and soon realized that interest was far greater than they imagined. Wait times for the tours sometimes stretched to three hours, and in 2005, they began adding rides to entertain guests while they waited. The concept worked — and Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park was born.
Thrill Rides: Testing Your Limits
While the original caverns remain a cornerstone, the park is now a destination for thrill seekers. One of its most talked-about rides is Defiance, the highest looping roller coaster in the United States. Perched on the cliff’s edge, it plunges riders into a beyond-vertical drop and flips them upside down against a backdrop of staggering mountain views.
Then there’s the Giant Canyon Swing — not for the faint of heart. It hurls riders out 1,300 feet above the Colorado River, leaving them momentarily suspended in space before the swing arcs back toward solid ground. The Alpine Coaster, a fan favorite, lets you control your speed as you race down the mountain on a winding track, banking through turns and coasting through pine forests.
Other adrenaline-packed rides include the Cliffhanger Roller Coaster, which clings to the mountaintop edge, and the Soaring Eagle Zip Ride, where you’re strapped into a two-seat chairlift that shoots you backward toward the cliff before rocketing you forward at thrilling speed.
Family Fun: Something for Everyone
Not every ride here is about white-knuckle adventure. Families with younger children will find plenty to do. The Wild West Express and Canyon Flyer offer gentler thrills, while attractions like the 4D motion theater and laser tag provide indoor fun.
The gondola itself is a hit with children, giving them a bird’s-eye view before they even set foot in the park. Seasonal events like Winter on the Mountain turn the whole place into a sparkling holiday village, with lights, music, and cozy fire pits.
Underground Wonders: Cave Tours
For many visitors, the real treasure lies underground. The park’s guided tours showcase rooms filled with delicate formations, echoing chambers, and narrow passages that reveal millions of years of geologic history.
The King’s Row tour, one of the most popular, takes guests deep inside the mountain to a brilliantly lit room where stalactites and stalagmites seem to grow in slow motion.
In contrast, the Fairy Cave tour gives you a sense of the original explorers’ challenges — twisting tunnels, tight squeezes, and surprises around every bend. The air is cool, the formations are intricate, and the guides’ stories add a sense of discovery that makes the caves feel alive.
Planning Your Visit
Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park is more than an amusement park — it’s a blend of nature’s handiwork and human imagination, a place where a gondola ride can lead to a roller coaster ride, and both can be followed by an underground tour into a world carved by water over millennia.
The park is open year-round, though ride availability can vary with the season. The gondola base is located in Glenwood Springs, just off I-70, and the park offers package tickets for rides, cave tours, or both. Summer weekends can be busy, so consider arriving early or visiting on a weekday for shorter lines.
Adventure Awaits in Glenwood Springs
For thrill seekers, it’s a chance to test your limits while surrounded by some of the most spectacular scenery in Colorado. For families, it’s a one-stop mountain adventure with something for every age. And for anyone with a sense of curiosity — like the Beckleys back in the ’80s — it’s proof that the best journeys often start with a single question: “I wonder what’s up there?”
